Course description
Collaborative Negotiation
In the historically traditional organization, boundaries were clear and hardwired with rigid structures. Hierarchy, titles, roles, relationships, dedicated units, and pools of expertise made for clear differences in focus, power and authority; a reflection of work, products and markets at the time. Of course, this traditional organizational map describes a world that no longer exists.
Collaboration describes a project management approach of working together, to solve problems that traditional cross boundary structures of communication and group-work can’t easily achieve.
Specifically, it is an approach to working, particularly through difficult situations, that invites the people involved to work together constructively and creatively on a problem while promoting the relationship. Particularly in situations where those you work with often resent being told and might respond with resistance, mistrust or indifference.
Project managers will learn to more effectively work across boundaries by merging two streams of learning:
- Building a more organized collaborative framework with tools, technique, behaviours and scripts to accommodate work with other organizations
- Examine how their personal style and behaviours can more effectively build positive relationships that foster collaboration.
- They will work hands-on with your own “real” cross organization boundary case study, addressing boundary issues and challenges, practicing the steps, tools, techniques, and behaviours of a more collaborative approach.
