Scotland is one of the UK's largest economic hubs, with over 5.3 million residents and 2.5 million workers. Scotland is the perfect place for apprenticeship training, hosting companies from every single sector and often attracting the very best. Home to some of the largest FTSE 100 companies (the Royal Bank of Scotland has its headquarters in Edinburgh) you are likely to find an apprenticeship training provider on your doorstep who is willing to travel to your headquarters to train your staff.
Whether you are an existing employee, a new starter or a HR professional looking to train your talent pool, Scotland's selection of training courses and apprenticeships has a lot to offer.
How do apprenticeships work in Scotland?
The Scottish apprenticeships system is different to the English one. Likewise, there are separate systems for Northern Ireland and Wales. Apprenticeships in Scotland are based on three different levels:
Foundation Apprenticeships give senior school pupils a valuable experience of the world of work, helping them gain a qualification and get a head start in their career. You’ll get early access to future talent for your workforce and support on real projects in your business.
Modern Apprenticeships allow new or existing employees to work towards an approved qualification, alongside their job.
Graduate Apprenticeships allow new or existing employees to work towards a degree level qualification whilst in full-time employment.
Scotland also has its own apprenticeship standards and frameworks. Frameworks are designed and maintained by the skills councils in Scotland. There are over 80 modern apprenticeship frameworks, including apprenticeships in the following areas:
- Creative and cultural apprenticeships
- Construction apprenticeships
- Tech apprenticeships
- Energy and Utility apprenticeships
- Financial apprenticeships
- Motor and automotive apprenticeships
- Care and development apprenticeships
- Security apprenticeships
Who can apply for a apprenticeships training in Scotland?
Apprenticeship training isn’t just for school leavers, although it does offer a valuable route into the career for new starters as well.
There is no age limit and apprenticeships are open to people of any age and any career level.
Apprenticeships are valuable for staff in any industry looking to learn practical, role-ready knowledge and skills. You can train existing staff as well as taking on new employees. Apprenticeships are offered at Foundation, Modern and Graduate level and the level of apprenticeship suited for your staff depends on their current education level and the type of job they currently do or wish to move into.
What's the benefit of apprenticeships in Scotland?
Scottish apprenticeships have a number of benefits for employers and employees alike. They are:
- Designed by employers, for employers
- Tailored to meet the needs of your industry
- Invest in young talent or upskill current employees
- Improve productivity, reduce staff costs and turnover
How are apprenticeships in Scotland funded?
The Scottish Government contributes towards the training costs for modern apprenticeships. Graduate apprenticeships are fully funded, and the fees are paid directly from Skills Development Scotland to the university or college your apprentice is studying with. Foundation level apprenticeships do not cost employers money in Scotland, as the learner is still at school.
