Course description
This module can be undertaken as an individual module or altogether as a package on the EI’s learning management system, with recorded presentations and exercises taught by a leading expert in process safety and a former deputy director of the UK Health & Safety Executive.

- Understand the importance of maintaining control of hazards at all times, including start up and shut down,
- Recognise the need for an effective shift handover,
- Explain the purpose of a pre-start-up review and condition check

Key Points to cover:
Purpose: To ensure plant and processes are operated in a safe condition and safety margins are maintained.
Learning Points:
- Designated operational parameters and safety margins documented and understood
- In PIDs, operational manuals and start up and shut down instructions
- Reflected accurately in DCS system and Safety Instrumented Systems
- No alteration of safety critical set points or alarm configuration without prior approval / MoC protocol applied
- Sufficient staff with appropriate competencies available at all times during start up, operation and shut down
- Pre-start up hazard review, including primary containment and control system checks and validation
- Start up and shut down procedures clearly set out together with information on expected plant / operational conditions at each stage
- Process conditions trending analysis
- Effective shift handover – exchange of plant status information
