Course description

This module can be undertaken as an individual module or altogether as a package on the EI’s learning management system, with recorded presentations and exercises taught by a leading expert in process safety and a former deputy director of the UK Health & Safety Executive.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the main process safety considerations in the selection and deployment of contractors
  • Understand the importance of contractor performance monitoring and communication about risks before and during work
  • Explain how method statements and other forms of risk assessment support safe working

Training Course Content

Key Points to cover:

Purpose: To ensure contractors have the right process safety competencies to work safely on hazardous plant and equipment and without compromising the integrity of the plant or control systems during their work.

Learning Points:

  • Effective selection procedure
    • based on process safety performance and not just occupational health performance demonstration of appropriate competencies and knowledge about major hazards before being selected
  • Use of preferred contractor’s register / contractor ‘passport scheme’
  • Pre-control of work via method statements / works orders and other risk assessments
  • Pre-work induction and safety briefings at start of the site work
    • Job ‘walk through’ discussions to check understanding and compliance with method statements
    • Pre-work checks that individual contractor employees meet the specified competency standards
  • Opportunity to stop work if dangerous situation occurs or uncertainty about risk
  • Suitable supervision / periodic checks during work
  • Hand back procedures and verification of integrity and function
  • Post -work reviews
    • Contractor’s feedback on the condition of plant and equipment and gathering of intelligence about plant / equipment condition
    • Appropriate sanctions for poor performance / unsafe behaviours / management of risk
