Course description
Learn more about animal care, handling and management with our accredited Level 3 Certificate in Practical Animal Care Skills at Writtle College.
You might already be working in the animal care sector and looking to further your knowledge and skills. Or you might be interested in gaining a recognised qualification and starting your career. Our course will give you all the practical experience and insights you need.
As a student at Writtle College you’ll use our animal studies centre, with its aquatic, reptile and companion animal rooms. you’ll also gain valuable experience with a work placement of at least one day per week.
You should be aged 19+ to study this course.

Suitability - Who should attend?
- 5 GCSEs at Grade 9-4 or A*-C, to include English, Maths and Science
- Satisfactory references from most recent school, college or employer
- Alternative qualifications or experience will be considered on application.

Mandatory unit
- Promote and Maintain the Health and Wellbeing of Animals
Selected specialist units
- Promote, Monitor and Maintain Health, Safety and Security in the Workplace
- Plan the Accommodation of Animals
- Plan Diets and Feeding Regimes for Animals
- Plan the Handling and Restraint of Animals
- Recognise and Interpret the Behaviour of Animals
- Provide Information on how to Maintain the Behaviour, Health and Welfare of Animals
Course delivery details
This course includes one mandatory unit and a range of specialist units. The mandatory unit offers a broad introduction to promoting and maintaining the health and wellbeing of animals, including identification of abnormal signs, monitoring, and maintaining accurate records.
Units are subject to change and availability.
Assessment
Units will be assessed internally, and moderated both internally and externally, through a learner's portfolio and related evidence.
