Course description
Teaching for mastery: that’s just good teaching and learning isn’t it?
Yes and no. The mastery approach as applied in Asian countries, is a research evidenced approach that identifies essential key elements of learning design, teaching approaches and a fundamental expectation that all children are capable of achieving.
In these sessions, you will gain a clear understanding of how using a growth mind set approach (of both adults and children), explicit teaching (CPA – concrete, pictorial, abstract), problem solving, differentiation, variation and intervention combine to result in children having a genuine understanding of the mathematics appropriate to their age.
The sessions will be practical and use examples from both KS1 and KS2 curriculum content to illustrate and explore what mastery approaches look like in reality. We shall particularly focus on differentiation within mastery teaching.
We shall consider implications for your practice especially what you should continue to do as well as what you might do differently so that every child can, not only access age appropriate content but also demonstrate a genuine understanding.
Teachers from both KS1 and KS2 will find this session useful.
They are especially appropriate for mathematics subject leaders to review their approaches to teaching and learning of mathematics.
