Advanced Assessment and Clinical Reasoning

This module aims to equip you with a knowledge and understanding of the concepts of advanced practice, building upon and developing your reasoning skills based upon a comprehensive physical, social and psychological assessment to inform your patient/client management.

Suitability - Who should attend?

Entry requirements

  • To have completed the Health Assessment module  level 6 or level 7  module or equivalent.
  • Work based supervisor/assessor 20 hours
  • Professional registration as a healthcare professional:
    • Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)
    • Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • Working in health and social care.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, youwill be able to:

  • Act autonomously and responsibly when undertaking complex health assessments.
  • Critically evaluate key concepts and debates related to advanced practice in contemporary healthcare delivery.
  • Identify advanced concepts underlying theoretical assessment frameworks and use a range of assessment methods to communicate your findings to support your judgements and potential interventions.
  • Analyse the importance of shared decision making within different healthcare settings.
  • Be aware of your own capabilities in key assessment areas and engage in assessment development activity through guided self-reflection.

  • Clinical reasoning

  • Assessing and managing risk in complex situations
  • Legal and ethical issues
  • Systems based physical assessment across the lifespan
  • Psycho social assessment
  • Advanced practice.

Course delivery details

Our CPD modules will be delivered using hybrid learning. This means that depending on the subject and content of learning and teaching, modules will mainly be delivered via a combination of face to face and online delivery, as this has worked really well for our practice-based colleagues. A couple of modules will be delivered solely online, however for most modules face to face contact time and attendance at the university will be required.
