Course description
Overview
This course will allow delegates to practice using plain English in client correspondence and when delivering client presentations. There are plenty of exercises and examples which makes for an interactive and stimulating course helping the delegates to develop their writing and presenting styles.
Who is this for?
This course will be of benefit to any practitioner involved in delivering legal advice, from trainees to senior partners and from pupils to silks. This course does not cover legal drafting or advocacy but focuses on presenting advice in a client-friendly way, both in writing and verbally. This course looks at various communication methods including presentation skills, written and verbal communication. Please note that those delegates with a particular interest in improving their writing skills may be interested in attending Clear Legal Writing
Please bring a recent piece of written work with you to the session – this can be a document, a letter or an email - anonymised if necessary; and please prepare a short (e.g. 5 minute) presentation on a legal topic to be delivered during the course, no slides or visual aids necessary.
What will you learn?
By the end of this course you will be able to:
- Apply the principles of plain English
- Use readability tools such as the Fog Index
- Access the Readability Statistics function in Microsoft Word to help assess the clarity of their writing
- State the nine different structures that can be used for business documents
- Apply a four-point action plan when editing text
- Design clear and effective PowerPoint presentations
- Deliver client presentations confidently
PSC Elective
This course may be taken as a PSC elective, although it may also be attended by non-trainees.
