Course description

Explore consumer demand, food security, provenance, ethical trade and how the fresh produce sector is adapting to meet demand. Study Sustainable Food Production (Fresh Produce) at ARU Writtle.

If you’re concerned about the environment and food security – and want to be help businesses to operate sustainably – our course is for you.

The world’s population is predicted to rise to 9 billion by 2050, with around two-thirds of people living in urban areas. This presents challenges in terms of production systems, food quality, and reduction of food waste.

As a student at ARU Writtle you’ll look at the nutritional benefits of fruit and vegetables, the ethical and business environments around fresh produce, and sustainable ways to meet demand for food.

You’ll gain hands-on experience of the industry, with opportunities to work or liaise with academics and peers in the Netherlands, Finland and South East Asia, visit commercial enterprises in the UK and Europe, and develop your own professional network. All our students take part in a series of commissioned projects, and hear from guest speakers. In Year 3, there’s also the option to join a short study tour.

As a graduate, you’ll be ready to use your skills in UK-based enterprises or those that operate on an international scale.
