Course description
Get the skills and expertise you need to coach at all levels of sport, with our professionally endorsed Level 3 National Extended Diploma at Writtle College.
As a student at Writtle College, you’ll prepare to work independently as a coach, with children or adults of all abilities.
You’ll develop technical skills and knowledge through core study units, which focus on coaching skills, sport development, and the links between physical activity and wellbeing.
The course features a range of optional units to increase your understanding of different aspects of sports coaching. These include sport psychology, fitness testing, sports injuries, and school sports delivery.
You’ll also have the opportunity to work towards a CYQ Level 2 Fitness Instructor qualification.

Suitability - Who should attend?
- 5 GCSEs at Grade 9-4 or A*-C; must include English, Maths and Science.
- Satisfactory references from most recent school, college or employer.
- Alternative qualifications or experience will be considered on application.

Course delivery details
This course includes both mandatory and optional units. You’ll complete all mandatory units and study five optional units, as determined by your Course Leader, from the list below.
There is also the opportunity to work towards a CYQ Level 2 Fitness Instructor qualification.

Assessment
We’ll assess your progress in a number of ways including written assignments, practical assessments and presentations.
