Course description
Gain the skills to work as an assistant groom on a stable yard with this British Horse Society (BHS) Stage 2 award. Study over 12 weeks at Writtle College.
If you want to progress from the basic principles of horse care achieved in BHS Stage 1, this training course provides evidence that you have the essential skills to work as an assistant groom at any yard, whether working with a riding school or with thoroughbreds.

Suitability - Who should attend?
You must be 16 years of age or above to join this course, and hold the BHS Stage 1 Care Award.
For all sessions, please come dressed for an equine yard. You're required to attend all riding sessions dressed in appropriate outdoor riding wear, an approved riding hat and gloves. We recommend bringing note-taking equipment with you.
This course will suit you if you already hold the BHS Stage 1 Care Award, and want to progress from the basic principles of horse care achieved in Stage 1. You must be 16 years of age or above to join the course.
Course delivery details
Our course runs for 12 weeks, one evening per week. It covers Learning Outcomes 1–11 as listed in The BHS Equine Excellence Pathway log book.
Separate one-day courses are available for your coach endorsements in Loading/Unloading Horses, Bathing and Lunging. These practical elements will not be covered in this course however, tacking up is included.
Holders of the BHS Stage 2 certificate are able to proceed on to BHS Stage 3.
Free parking is available on campus inWrittle: we'll issue a permit to you and ask that it's clearly displayed in your vehicle. Tea and coffee-making facilities are available; please bring any other refreshments.
