Course description

Engineering design and draughtspersons produce designs and drawings for manufacturing, technical or commercial use. Wiltshire College and University Centre supports training pathways for electrical systems, control and instrumentation systems and mechanical systems/components.Apprentices will gain an understanding and need to:• Understand technical drawings and specifications and be able to create their own • Identify factors likely to affect design decisions • Produce CAD (computer aided design) models and engineering drawings • Be able to communicate design information to internal and external partiesTo support this Wiltshire College ensures that each apprentice will spend foundation training understanding practical workshop/site activities in order to gain the experience to design effectively.

Suitability - Who should attend?

5 GCSEs at Grade 4/C or above including Math’s, English Language and a Science.

Apprentices are required to undertake a skills assessment as part of the application

Training Course Content

Apprentices will undertake foundation practical training to gain an understanding of their industry and future design briefs. Areas available for foundation training include:

  • • Mechanical Manufacture (Machining) Engineering
  • • Mechanical and Electrical Maintenance Engineering
  • • Electrical / Electronic Engineering

On completion of the above apprentices will then move into a more technical training phase allowing them to focus on one or more of the following areas at a higher level:

  • • Mechanical Systems and Components Design
  • • Electrical and Electronic Systems
  • • Instrumentation and Control Systems

Other areas of training will include Health and safety, IT Systems and CAD, Continuous Improvement and Quality Control, Materials and many more.
