Course description

Speaker(s): Diane Rochford RDH, BSc (Hons), qualified as a dental hygienist at Guy’s (London), in March 1996. Joining Dr Linda Greenwalls’ team in September 1996, Diane works as an extended duties dental hygienist in the practice.

Description:

The course is designed specifically for dental hygienists & therapists who would like to expand their knowledge and develop their skills by providing tooth whitening for patients, focusing on home and in-surgery techniques. The course is both theory and hands-on, in line with GDC Scope of Practice, whilst following the European and UK legislation concerning tooth whitening products.

Aims:

Overall aim:

To provide delegates with the skills, knowledge and confidence to undertake appropriate tooth whitening treatment safely for patients of the practice.

Objectives:

At the end of the session the students will be able to:

  1. List the components that form a comprehensive examination prior to tooth whitening

  2. Discuss how tooth whitening works

  3. Design a suitable prescription template and quick reference sheet

  4. Explain the types of tooth whitening treatments available and recommend the most appropriate treatment

  5. Clarify the answers to patient’s questions

  6. Demonstrate a safe and effective method for taking alginate impressions

  7. Apply home whitening gel safely into the patient’s trays.

  8. Perform in-surgery isolation safely

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Implement the use of a comprehensive examination and prescription

  2. Integrate an effective tooth whitening programme into the practice

  3. Practice impression taking & in-surgery isolation

  4. Demonstrate the safe application of gel into the patient’s trays for home whitening.
