MSc/MRes Biodiversity and Conservation

At Leeds we believe biodiversity can only be managed and conserved when it can be measured and interpreted properly. Our programmes are distinct from similar courses offered in the UK in their concentration on the biological principles underlying biodiversity, its assessment and management. They are also unusual in the breadth of options available and the ability to combine more academic topics with ‘hands-on’ practical conservation.

These programmes are suitable for graduates wishing to enter a career in conservation or to prepare for a research studentship. They are also suitable for those with practical conservation experience wishing to improve their knowledge of biological processes and advance their qualifications. The programmes provide an understanding of the biological principles and institutional framework underlying biodiversity and its conservation. They also provide a core body of analytical skills and experience of research, laying the groundwork for careers in academia, government and non-government bodies. In combination with the more practical options are available, this provides a unique breadth of training.

Students may study for an MSc or MRes. The course content for the MRes is similar to the MSc, but with greater emphasis on research projects. Our conservation internship ('sandwich year') allows students to gain academic credits for work related to biodiversity and conservation.

The programmes are made up of modules that add up to 180 credits, with a mix of compulsory and optional modules. Teaching methods include project work, field courses, lectures, practicals, tutorials and workshops.

Research projects are the single most important component of the two degrees. The range of project topics is large and diverse, covering applied, empirical and theoretical subjects. They have been carried out in over twenty countries so far, and the number increases every year. Some example titles and project descriptions are available on the website.

We see great value in the learning opportunities offered by practical field courses and offer two optional field courses as part of the course.
