Course description
The course will scrutinise the recent events of the US Gulf of Mexico and the blow-out of the BP Macondo Well. The technical, regulatory and legal issues of the case will be explored in detail.
Petroleum regulation is the customary law of the oilfields. It has developed over the last 150 years from the sound working practice of expert oilmen (such as petroleum engineers, geologists, geophysicists) and specialists (such as accountants, lawyers and tax experts) into the Good Oilfield Practice. This code of practice advocates setting and maintaining international code of the highest technical standards despite the pressures faced by the exploratory and production sector - increasing costs, soaring salaries, a dwindling pool of skilled manpower and the need for constant investment in advancing technologies.
