Course description

Strategic Management

Taught by the Institute of Local Government Studies (INLOGOV), the UK’s leading academic centre for research and teaching on local governance and strategic public management, this course focuses on the importance of strategy the integral role it plays in effective public management. It’s through the influence of INLOGOV that you’ll develop a deeper understanding of today’s public service practices and strategies, preparing you to lead change anywhere in the world.

By examining the theoretical frameworks and data underpinning strategic management, this course focuses on providing you with the practical knowledge and skills to use strategic management capabilities in government and public sector organisations.

Suitability - Who should attend?

To be eligible to apply for a short course, you will need to have obtained (or be predicted to obtain) an upper second-class degree or postgraduate diploma from a UK university, OR an equivalent qualification from a recognised institution. Professional applications may also be considered. Please speak to a Recruitment Co-ordinator to discuss your eligibility.

Outcome / Qualification etc.

After completing the 8-week course, you will receive an official University of Birmingham postgraduate micro-credential certificate (worth 10 academic credits) and a transcript. You will be able to use these academic credits to apply for advanced entry to the University of Birmingham’s full Online Masters of Public Administration (MPA) qualification.

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Explain the principles of strategic management and understand why it’s key to public administration
  • Apply core strategic management skills, including shaping emergent strategies and meta-planning in complex adaptive public service systems
  • Map and analyse forces for strategic change which are driven by the external environment
  • Generate and evaluate coherent strategic options for public services
  • Map strategic stakeholder groups, evaluate their importance to the achievement of strategic aims and engage them effectively in the development and implementation of strategy
