Course description

Chemistry GCE A Level Level 3:

Responsible for everything from the air we breathe to the water we drink, chemistry is an integral part of the world. If you want to learn more about how new materials are constructed, how food is made, or how medicines are developed, then this A-Level course is for you.

You’ll cover topics across all aspects of the subject, including organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry and physical chemistry. In your first year, you’ll learn how chemistry affects the environment around us, why space explorations analyse chemicals, what the atomic structure is, and how the Victorians made mirrors! You’ll look at organic molecules, exploring how plastics are made, how alcohol ferments and how cleaner fuels are being developed.

In physical chemistry, you’ll focus on thermodynamics and bases buffers, while in inorganic chemistry you’ll see how ions react with elements in the periodic table. Throughout the course, you’ll be completing a series of practical experiments to build on the theory you’re learning, developing the scientific logic to critically assess a wide range of issues in the community and the world!

You’ll be learning in a laboratory environment throughout this course, using both theory and practical work. Assessment will take the form of three exams at the end of the two years, though will also take two exams after your AS-Level year for a separate qualification.

Your practical skills will be continually assessed throughout the course, leading to a separate practical accreditation.

A Chemistry A-Level opens up a huge range of degree choices at a number of universities. You could go on to study anything from Environmental Science to Metallurgy, Food Science to Toxicology.

There are a number of a different job roles and career opportunities you can follow too, as a result of a chemistry-based qualification. You could find yourself working as a pharmacist or dentist, a chemical engineer or a forensic scientist – the choice is yours!
