Course description

Studying chemistry can help you understand the world around you and the different substances in it. An A Level in chemistry is essential for most healthcare-related or science-based degree courses.

You will enjoy this course if you have a strong maths background and enjoy learning about how everyday substances around us are made and behave. You will also develop essential skills in numeracy, logical thinking and practical experimentation.

Vocational science route: If you wish to study more practical applied science you can apply to study either the BTEC Level 2 or Level 3 Applied Science Diplomas. Both of these courses incorporate units of study covering physics, biology and chemistry. This course can be studied as part of the science pathway.

Course delivery details

You will study in our specialist laboratories and develop a greater understanding of the general principles of chemistry. Our experienced staff will increase your understanding of chemical elements and compounds.

You will develop the skills necessary for further academic study, such as: strong report writing, essay writing and study skills, including presentation skills.

You will also improve the wider skills vital for success in further study or employment, including self-confidence, speaking in front of others, working with others, taking responsibility and managing your time. By the end of the course, you will have benefited from individual support, including clear advice about higher education and careers.

Your Chemistry AS level can be a stand-alone qualification or lead on to A2 study. You will be part of a tradition of success – we have a 100% pass rate. Chemistry students get the opportunity to visit local businesses and you can also take part in Aim Higher Chemistry days at Reading University and exam revision conferences. Most classes are double staffed with our specialist Chemistry technician. You will have your own specialist personal tutor who you will meet individually or as part of a tutorial and they will help you set review and achieve your targets.

There is an extensive programme of support to help you make higher education decisions and moving on to university. The vast majority of A Level students progress successfully to higher education. There is an extensive programme of enrichment opportunities on offer and you will be encouraged to select from a range including volunteering, work experience sport and performing.

There are three units of assessment each year: two, timed exams and a practical assessment. Formal assessment is through examinations and (in some subjects) through coursework.

The examination periods are in May/June. There will be a range of regular assignments, essays and class-based assessments to help you develop your study skills for the next educational step. Individual learning targets are set each term and you will receive regular feedback on your progress in meeting these targets.
