Course description
This course would suit young people who wish to pursue a career in animal care, such as zoo keeper, canine carer, animal nursing assistant, pet shop assistant or farm worker.
On this one-year course you would be expected to obtain a one day a week placement in an animal establishment e.g. pet shop, vets, farm, or zoo. Units include: Understanding and Promoting Animal Health; Animal Behaviour; Dog Grooming; Exotic Health and Husbandry; Equine Health and Husbandry; Farm Livestock; Animal Accommodations; Planning and Monitoring Animal Feeding; Animal Handling and Safe Working.
Assessment is by assignment work and practical observation. Successful students can progress on to a second year of the course. You can then go into employment or to university.

Suitability - Who should attend?
You will need GCSE Grade 4/C in Maths and English and Science. You will be expected to buy your own overalls and steel toe-capped boots for practical work. Finding a suitable placement in an animal care establishment would be an advantage but is not a course requirement.
