BA (Hons) Textiles
Our BA (Hons) Textile degree offers a rich exploration of textiles in its broadest context, from surface, pattern, texture, material and colour, to design, print, knit and weave, to fashion, interiors, manufacture and product.
The course provides you the opportunity to push the boundaries of what textiles is and what can be created, blending traditional and contemporary techniques, growing your knowledge, skills, confidence, motivation and ambition, that takes you from the first principles of textiles through to the inventiveness and innovation that will lead your artistic vision or professional practice

Suitability - Who should attend?
Textiles is an open access degree; this means that there are no formal qualifications or experience required to join the course. All you need is a passion for the arts, and willingness to learn.
All OCA courses require students to be IT literate, have a good internet connection, and have a good standard of English equivalent to CEFR B2.

Final Award Title and Type: BA (Hons) Textiles
Upon successful completion of the course students are able to:
- Demonstrate proficiency in a comprehensive range of textiles practices and techniques.
- Manage the learning process resourcefully and independently and make appropriate use primary sources and scholarly reviews.
- Demonstrate by means of written work and oral presentations a critical understanding of the principles of textile art and knowledge of emerging aspects of the discipline and those at the forefront of debate.
- Critically and objectively evaluate own work
Training Course Content
Core Units
Levels 1 (HE4) explore A Textile Vocabulary, and Ideas and Processes. Visual and imaginative principles of colour, texture, pattern and materials in a wide range of art and design contexts. Learning is consolidated through reflective practice and critical thinking skills. The units aim to inspire a sense of curiosity and inventiveness that leads to a sensitive and investigative approach to the creative process.
At Level 2 (HE5) there is the opportunity to explore traditional craft skills, digital technology as well as conventional and unconventional textile materials. Integral to the more practical projects you will be supported in developing research skills and critical engagement with the work of others.
At Level 3 (HE6) the modules Personal Specialism and Research aim to strengthen individual textile practice by informing creative development through rigorous and challenging intellectual enquiry. Resulting in a distinctive body of work and an extended piece of academic writing that support each other. The final unit in the programme, Sustaining Your Practice, guides and aids you to life beyond the degree by building a set of professional and entrepreneurial skills, including a professional online profile, exhibiting your work locally and beginning to assemble a professional network, that prepares you for further study, employment and a professional creative practice.

As a flexible degree, you can complete the programme in 4–9 years, with a maximum of four years to complete each level of the course.

- Level 1 (HE4): £4,050 for the level
