NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety (Part-Time)

The new NEBOSH National Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety Management Professionals is a perfect choice if you want to make health and safety your career.

The Diploma will give you the knowledge and practical skills you need to perform as a leading health and safety professional of the future. You will gain confidence in your capabilities to recognise and solve everyday health and safety issues and take opportunities for improvement.

This advanced health and safety qualification will support your academic and career progression. You are entitled to use the designatory letters DipNEBOSH after your name once you pass the NEBOSH National Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety Management Professionals. In addition, once you have completed the qualification it is anticipated that you will be able to apply for the following memberships.

Graduate Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (Grad IOSH)
Member of International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (MIIRSM)
Board of Certified Safety Professionals (Exemption from sitting the ASP examination if all other requirements are me).

Building upon the foundation of knowledge provided by the NEBOSH General Certificate, it is particularly relevant for:

  • People with health and safety responsibilities who want to gain an in-depth understanding

Entry Requirements

There are no mandatory qualification entry requirements, but it is strongly recommended learners have undertaken the NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety. The syllabus assumes that learners will have this level of prior learning.

It is important that learners have a suitable standard of English language in order to understand and articulate the concepts contained in the syllabus. NEBOSH recommends that learners undertaking this qualification should reach a minimum standard of English equivalent to an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 7.0 or higher in IELTS tests.

Outcome / Qualification etc.

On completion of the qualification, you will be able to:

  • Understand how health and safety legislation is applied in a workplace and the possible enforcement actions that could be taken
  • Identify and effectively communicate relevant health and safety information
  • Advise on a range of common workplace health and safety issues including how these can be assessed, controlled and monitored
  • Develop a health and safety policy strategy (including proactive safety, Corporate Social Responsibility and the change management process)
  • Contribute to a risk management strategy
  • Promote a positive health and safety culture
  • Develop and audit health and safety management systems
  • Maintain individual and organisational health and safety competence
  • Manage contractors and supply chains to ensure compliance with health and safety standards.

Training Course Content

On completion of ND1 you will be able to

  • Develop, evaluate and interpret relevant health and safety information (such as legislation, guidance, best practice, procedures) and communicate it effectively to those who need it (both within your organisation and those affected by your organisation’s activities such as contractors and insurers).
  • Promote a positive health and safety culture by: (a) gaining commitment and participation; and (b) engaging, supporting and influencing leaders (and others) to change attitudes and behaviour and make health and safety a priority.
  • Assess, develop and maintain individual and organisational health and safety competence.
  • Understand risk management including the techniques for identifying hazards, the different types of risk assessment, considerations when implementing sensible and proportionate additional control measures and developing a risk management strategy.
  • Develop and implement proactive and reactive health and safety monitoring systems and carry out reviews and auditing of such systems.
  • Continually develop your own professional skills and ethics to actively influence improvements in health and safety by providing persuasive arguments to workers at all levels.
  • Develop a health and safety policy strategy within your organisation (including proactive safety, Corporate Social Responsibility and the change management process).
  • Contribute to health and safety legal actions.
  • Manage contractors and supply chains to ensure compliance with health and safety standards.

ND2 – Do – Controlling Workplace Health Issues (60 taught hours; 45 self-study hours and 40 hours in preparing the assessment). This unit is assessed via a scenario-based case study. You have 4 weeks from the assignment release date to complete your assignment.

On completion of ND2 you will be able to

  • Advise the organisation on a range of common workplace health issues/ hazards including how these can be assessed and controlled and the legal duties associated with these issues/hazards.

ND3 – Do – Controlling Workplace Safety Issues (54 taught hours; 41 self-study hours and 40 hours in preparing the assessment). This unit is assessed via a scenario-based case study. You have 4 weeks from the assignment release date to complete your assignment.

On completion of ND3 you will be able to

  • Advise the organisation on a range of common workplace safety issues/ hazards including how these can be assessed and controlled and the legal duties associated with these issues/hazards.

Continuing Studies

Successful learners are invited to attend the NEBOSH Graduation and Awards Ceremony in the summer following successful completion of their Diploma.
