Course description
This course aims to provide students with knowledge and critical understanding of the concepts and key issues related to Maternal and Neonatal Health (MNH) and Safe Motherhood. Students learn how to develop a strategic plan for the reduction of maternal and neonatal mortality, and how to plan, organise, monitor & evaluate evidence-based MNH programmes and services, taking into consideration the importance of effective functioning health systems.

Suitability - Who should attend?
Anyone who works in the fields of international child health would find this course useful, especially doctors, nurses, midwives, community health practitioners and public health researchers. Proof of English to IELTS 6.5.
Outcome / Qualification etc.
Upon successful completion of this programme, delegates will be able to:
- Plan evidence-based programmes and services for the reduction of maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity and improvement of MNH
- Discuss critically the causes and determinants of maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity and the global strategy for improvement of MNH from UN agencies
- Critically evaluate MNH programmes and services and explain the limitations of methods for measuring maternal mortality
- Demonstrate a detailed and critical understanding of the concepts, strategies and historical development of the Safe Motherhood Initiative
- Introduce and use quality improvement methods for MNH services, notably setting of standards, carrying out maternal death reviews and criteria-based clinical audit
