Course description
This full-time taught masters course in the School of Education is suitable for educators and teachers in all phases of compulsory and post-compulsory education. It is also relevant for postgraduates and users of business English wishing to develop their skills and knowledge of English language teaching (ELT) to masters level.
It is designed with both home-language and international English-speaking students in mind. It is particularly valuable to international candidates teaching English in their home countries. Course members will learn about historical and socio-cultural aspects of ELT across the globe as well as present-day teaching and research methods.
The course is taught across two semesters, followed by an independent research project. You will:
- learn about past and present theory and practice of ELT, such as ELT methodology and socio-cultural factors in teaching English as a foreign language;
- study the principles and practice of second language acquisition;
- learn about curricular approaches to the teaching of English language and literature in the UK, including recent thinking on the teaching, testing and assessment of literacy;
- investigate more general themes in education pedagogy, policy and practice, including topical issues within the UK education system, such as early years education and special educational needs.
Peer support and self-evaluation are vital features of the course, and you will be encouraged to share and critique each other's ideas and draft materials, prior to independent work on a research project and finally, the dissertation.
