Course description
A-Level Chemistry will develop your understanding of the properties and reactions of substances. You will have the opportunity to apply your understanding to familiar and more challenging new situations through a wide range of problem solving activities. Practical work is an important and essential aspect of the course. A pass in A Level Chemistry is required to study most Biological Science degrees including; Medicine, Dentistry; Biomedical Science and Nutrition. A-Level Chemistry is a linear course: students will complete three exam papers at the end of their two years of study.
This is a linear A-Level course, taught over two years, with all the examinations completed at the end of the second year. Content is split into six teaching modules:
- Module 1 - Development of practical skills in chemistry
- Module 2 - Foundations in chemistry
- Module 3 - Periodic table and energy
- Module 4 - Core organic chemistry
- Module 5 - Physical chemistry and transition elements
- Module 6 - Organic chemistry
Students will produce a portfolio of their practical work to fulfil the requirements of the Practical Endorsement in Chemistry. At the end of the two years, students will take the following exams
- Paper 01: Periodic table, elements and physical chemistry - worth 37% of the final marks
- Paper 02: Synthesis and analytical techniques - worth 37% of the final marks
- Paper 03: Unified chemistry - worth 26% of the final marks.
You will also be required to hand in your lab book to show that you have completed the laboratory practicals. The majority of A-Level students will progress onto a Higher Education Degree at University.
