Proof Reading and Copy Editing

This course has been designed for those who would like to learn and practise some of the skills that you will need if you are to work as a copy-editor or proof-reader. This course aims to give you the basic tools to perform these two distinct roles. There is no guarantee that by attending the course you will find work as a copy-editor or proof-reader, but you will have acquired the tools of the trade, and an awareness of what is involved in producing clear concise English that is suitable for publication. By the end of the course you will have been given the opportunity to: understand the role of the copy-editor and the proof-reader within the context of the whole publishing process; learn how to tackle a raw manuscript and prepare it for design/typesetting, examining all elements of a published work from cover to cover; learn the British Standard proofreading symbols and practise them on a variety of texts and layouts; work closely on different texts, looking at spelling, punctuation and grammar – the nitty gritty of the copy-editor’s/proof-reader’s job.
