Course description
This is a one-week course on Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing covering important parts of Geometric Product Specification standards. The content covers fundamental topics on dimensional management, variation in product make and assembly. Also, reading engineering drawings with typical examples from industry. Then it moves into the introduction of symbolic language of product documentation. The course intends to provide the attendees with skills required to evaluate annotated design drawings, while being able to create product definitions by implementing the GD&T principles.
Design intent is required to be communicated to various stakeholders as part of product development processes. The conventional but still main means of communication is through engineering drawings. There is chronic shortage of skills in correctly understanding engineering drawings amongst many graduates in various engineering disciplines. This is said to be due to the lack of structured training on engineering design communication at most universities. This course is aims to provide a good bases upon which one can develop the required understanding from beginners to intermediate level on the topic of GD&T that is now integral to the product design process.
By the end of the course the attendees should have the ability to find more advanced information in related topics. The course is delivered via joined lecture and tutorial sessions, where the attendees will have the chance to put their learnings to practice. Typical case study scenarios are designed to allow activity led learning in each practical session. The participants are also encouraged to bring examples from their workplace to discuss during the freestyle practical sessions as part of the course.
Upcoming start dates
Suitability - Who should attend?
The course is mostly beneficial for engineering lab technicians, product designers, manufacturing and assembly and quality engineers. This course is suitable for anyone who needs to read GD&T annotated drawings with good understanding of the theory and practice of functional tolerancing.
Outcome / Qualification etc.
What you will learn
The course will up skill attendees with a general understanding and knowledge of GD&T. More specifically, on completion of the course you will be able to:
- read industrial product drawings at assembly and component levels,
- evaluate GD&T annotated drawings,
- assess the impact of each defined tolerances on manufacturability, ease of assembly and validation of the product in hand,
- apply learnings to define datum structures based on product functionality requirements,
- allocate drawings with functional tolerancing using various GD&T symboles including tolerance modifiers,
- discuss the tolerance stack up in a tolerance chain.
Training Course Content
Core content
- Basics of product development process
- Variation in the context of product development, manufacturing and inspection
- Industrial product design and communication
- Introduction to ISO GPs and ASME Y14.5 standards
- Active reading and interpretation of engineering drawings
- Annotating design drawings with functional tolerancing
Course delivery details
Course structure
This course is delivered through a mixture of lectures, tutorials and discussion of case studies. Active participation from the delegates is strongly encouraged particularly during the whole course in order to consolidate learning. All delegates will receive a Certificate of Attendance upon completion of this course.
In addition to paper based practical sessions the course requires the use of Catia V5 software. The delivery is person in one of the PC labs (with Catia installed) on university campus. For the practical sessions physical sample parts along with basic measurement tools will be provided.
