This open-entry course is ideal for professionals working in financial services who have some experience or have undertaken previous study of trusts, tax, and estate planning. The course is also suitable for those working in the banking sector dealing with trusts and estates.

You will be able to:
- Describe the various lifetime trust structures commonly employed in private client work.
- Explain the use and appropriateness of different will trusts frequently encountered in estate planning.
- Understand the purpose and operation of trusts used alongside life and pension contracts.
- Calculate the transferable nil rate band for widowed clients, ensuring accurate recommendations for inheritance tax planning.
- Identify factors influencing a client's residence and domicile, outlining their impact on estate planning needs.
- Analyse opportunities for clients to mitigate inheritance tax through exemptions and lifetime gifts.
- Understand and paraphrase the technical legal language used in discussions about private client matters.
- Discuss the consequences of dying intestate under English or Scottish law and outline the duties and responsibilities of trustees, particularly in investment matters.
Course delivery details
This course is available for study twice annually with intakes in January and July (and assessments taking place in May and November).
The 4-month programme is delivered online.
Enrolment onto this course will include the following:

The course is assessed by way of a five-hour open book written examination comprising of multiple-choice questions and five 15-mark essay style questions.
Once you have successfully completed this course, you will gain 30 Diploma-level credits towards STEP membership and be awarded the STEP Certificate for Financial Services – Trust and Estate Planning
