Course description
The course will explore the issues that advisers need to consider when advising clients with a cross-border aspect to their estate.
This course is subject to the rigorous quality assurance procedures of Alliance Manchester Business School, a faculty of the University of Manchester.
- Efficient cross-border estate administration: Learn how to administer a cross-border estate efficiently, encompassing various legal systems and considering issues of property, intestacy, and conventions. Gain a deep understanding of factors crucial for resolving conflicts arising from foreign laws.
- Cross-jurisdictional expertise: Appreciate fundamental differences between common law, civil law, and Shariah law systems, providing insights into their approaches to succession and family matters.
- Practical application skills: Acquire hands-on knowledge to advise on the practical application of EU Regulation 650/2012 and understand approaches in non-bound jurisdictions.
- Tax regime proficiency: Understand tax regimes across different jurisdictions and their impact on the estate, including the effects of applicable tax treaties on investments.

Suitability - Who should attend?
The course is designed for all professionals dealing with wills, succession, and probate in relation to cross-border estates.
Entry requirements:
Applicants must have obtained 60 STEP entry-level credits to enrol on this course
OR
Be a member of STEP.
It is assumed that applicants have, as a minimum, experience and knowledge of succession and estate administration in their own jurisdiction.
Outcome / Qualification etc.
Upon completion of this qualification, you will be able to:
- understand factors in resolving conflicts of foreign laws
- appreciate differences in common law, civil law, and Shariah systems, especially in succession matters
- advise on habitual residence, domicile, and nationality in diverse scenarios
- grasp and apply the concept of renvoi effectively
- advise on asset devolution in different systems, considering property, intestacy, and relevant conventions/Reg 650/2012
- provide guidance on how marriage, partnerships, adoption, and surrogacy impact succession
- explain tax regimes adopted in different jurisdictions
- know how to administer a cross-border estate in practice
Course delivery details
This course is available for study twice annually, with intakes beginning in January and July (and assessments taking place in May and November). The programme is delivered online and will take four months to complete.
Enrolment onto this course will include the following:

o self-assessment tools
o distance learning support
- assessment fees
The course is assessed by way of an end of course 3500-4000 word written assignment based on a published case study. The case study will be published two months ahead of the submission date.
Once you have successfully completed this course, you will gain 30 diploma-level credits towards STEP membership and be awarded the STEP Advanced Certificate in Cross-Border Estates.
