This qualification will help those involved with the creation and administration of trusts to anticipate, and avoid, the common pitfalls which can lead to trust litigation.
This course can be taken as part of The STEP Diploma.
This programme will provide you with a practical overview of trusts and commonly encountered themes regarding disputes, thus reducing the risk of litigation, as well as providing guidance on when proceedings are necessary. The course has been designed and written by a leading trusts litigator,Toby Graham (Farrer & Co.), and is awarded in association withAlliance Manchester Business School, the University of Manchester.
Completing the Advanced Certificatewill enable you to:
- understand the recurrent themes and key principles which often arise in trust disputes and anticipate the different causes of trust disputes
- identify the potential risks involved in the creation and administration of trusts and how to manage those risks
- take appropriate measures to protect the interests of relevant parties threatened by a looming trust dispute
- take appropriate action to try to avoid trust litigation from unfolding
- understand the litigation process in outline, including the issues to consider in cross-border litigation

- English law, but also draws on case law from other trust jurisdictions
Course delivery details
This course is available for study twice annually, with intakes beginning in January and July (and assessments taking place in May and November).
The programme is delivered online and will take four months to complete. We recommend that you spend four to six hours per week on private study for the four months prior to the assessment.

The course is assessed by way of a 3500-–4000 word written assignment, based on a published case study.
Once you have successfully completed this course, you will gain 30 Diploma-level credits towards STEP membership and be awarded theSTEP Advanced Certificate in Trust Disputes.
