CDM15 Principal Designer
The CIOB Academy has launched a new one-day Principal Designer Awareness Course to provide delegates with the knowledge and tools needed to fulfill the role of Principal Designer in construction projects. This course covers the skills, knowledge, and experience required to ensure hazards are identified and significant risks are managed.
The course is designed for initial designers, designers within the Principal Contractor organisation, and specialist contractors carrying out design work. After successful completion of the course and assessment, delegates will receive an assessment result certificate and have the opportunity to participate in an online exam to receive an exam result certificate. These certificates demonstrate the delegate’s industry standard skills and understanding of their duties and the basic principles of prevention required by all designers.

Suitability - Who should attend?
This course is suitable for designers employed by the client and / or the principal contractor and / or special contractors with design responsibility. Also, for other professionals in the procurement, design and delivery of a project.
Outcome / Qualification etc.
By the end of the course you will be able to:
- Understand the Principal Designers and Designers duties under CDM Regulations 2015
- Be aware of the important part the Client has in ensuring adequate time and resources, together with maintaining and reviewing arrangements are in place.
- Understand the importance and benefits of good procurement and design risk management can help projects be on time and within budget through mitigating the risk of accidents and incidents etc.
- Aware of the consequence of ensuring the pre-construction information and good design risk management is applied.
- Understanding pre-construction phase overlaps with design changes during the construction phase till practical completion.
- Ensuring the right information is provided to the right people at the right time.
- Be able identify the links between CDM and current UK health and safety legislation (i.e. general principles of prevention)
- Implement the role and duties of the Principal Designer and Designer under CDM
- Implement the process of managing and co-ordinating health and safety in design, including the communication process; collaborative team-based risk management; change management and the impact of design on accident prevention strategies
- Utilise recommended risk management tools to inform design decisions relating to reasonably foreseeable risks.
Training Course Content
The course will cover:
- Session 1 Welcome, Aim, Objective, Reason why and Introduction
- Session 2 Latest UK Construction Statistics – Current Sector Plan and Strategy
- Session 3 HSE’s Role & Enforcement etc
- Session 4 Brief background to Health & Safety Act, WAH, CDM and links to other relevant key legislation, guidance and publications*
- Session 5 Brief overview of CDM Duties and requirements of the Duty Holders
- Session 6 How planning and design incl. the importance of temporary works and the Client’s duties on ‘Arrangements’
- Session 7 Duty-holder interaction – Exercise (20 Min Film “Benefits of Foresight”): Identify the main CDM Requirements on a project timeline, in relation to the Client, Principal Designer, Designer and Principal Contractor
- Session 8 Managing Control and Co-ordinating health and safety within design and pre- construction phase – Film: “Working with roofs”
- Session 5 CDM in practice: design hazard logs/risk registers (e.g. Design Residual Risk Registers (DRM Tool or DRR); SiD (Safety in Design) examples; RAG lists; Basic utilisation of BIM)
- Session 6 Syndicate Exercise: Identify design hazards/problems and solutions based on project drawings/photos/scenarios
- Session 7 Summary with Q&A
