BREEAM Domestic Refurbishment | New Assessor
This course provides the knowledge and skills to become a BREEAM Domestic Refurbishment Assessor. This enables you to drive sustainability by assessing and delivering domestic refurbishment BREEAM certified projects in the UK.
BREEAM Domestic Refurbishment provides a methodology, software tool and certification for those responsible for delivering sustainable domestic refurbishment projects. It is designed to help building owners and occupiers save operating costs, reduce the environmental impacts of refurbishments and to increase the sustainability of existing building stock.
This training course enables you to gain a practical understanding of BREEAM Domestic Refurbishment, and apply to become a licensed assessor under the scheme.

This course is designed for those who wish to become an assessor under the BREEAM Domestic Refurbishment scheme. This might include:

- Gain an understanding of sustainable refurbishment and the refurbishment market.
- Understand and be confident in assessing the technical aspects of the domestic refurbishment scheme.
- Understand the assessment process and support structures in place for the scheme and assessors.
- Gain a brief overview of Health & Safety and Building Regulations in a refurbishment context.
- Understand the differences between the assessment of refurbishments compared to new build.
Successfully passing this course enables you to apply for your assessor’s license under the BREEAM Domestic Refurbishment scheme.
Training Course Content
This course comprises of approximately 30 hours of own-pace training material introducing you to the BREEAM Domestic Refurbishment scheme. This is followed by classroom/ virtual event focusing on technical aspects of the scheme.

Virtual Classroom Training
- Day 1: For the classroom course trainees participate in an introduction to Domestic Refurbishment scheme, the assessment process, how BREEAM works and a technical overview of management, health and wellbeing and energy categories
- Day 2: Covers a technical overview of water, materials, waste and pollution categories. The day also looks at the scope of BREEAM, examination information and the BREEAM Quality Assurance process. In addition, there is a question and answer (Q&A) session
Examinations
The course programme concludes with two online examinations, set at a day and time to be agreed between the learner and ProctorU, who invigilate examinations on behalf of BRE Academy. The two examinations must be passed for learners to be classified as competent:
- BREEAM General Understanding examination.
- BREEAM Domestic Refurbishment Technical examination.
Both exams use an ‘open book’ format, meaning you can use any documents related to the course to aid you.
