ESOL - Entry 3 Speaking & Listening
- To improve your language skills by identifying areas for development
- To learn about life in the UK
- To enable you to speak, read and write in English at a level necessary to function and progress at work and in society in general
- To develop the four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing following the National Adult Literacy Core Curriculum

Suitability - Who should attend?
This course is for adult (19+) speakers whose home language is not English and who need to develop their English language skills in order to live and work in the United Kingdom. For students on JSA, ESA (WRAG) or other eligible income-based benefits, and who are studying to improve skills to help them gain employment, these courses are free. Learners on other benefits with a low income may also qualify for a significantly discounted rate.
Training Course Content
By the end of the course, you will have a greater understanding of living in the UK for citizenship purposes. You will be able to:
- Speak clearly using formal language when necessary
- Make requests and ask questions to obtain information in familiar and unfamiliar situations
- Express clearly statements of fact and give short explanations, accounts and descriptions
- Participate in and respect the turn-taking of others during discussions
- Respond to a range of questions about familiar topics
- Listen for detail and main points and follow the gist of explanations, instructions and narratives
- Recognise and understand relevant specialist key words
- Read and understand words and phrases commonly used on forms
- Read and understand short descriptive and explanatory texts
- Use a dictionary to find the meaning of unfamiliar words
- Plan and draft writing using short paragraphs
- Proofread and correct writing for grammar and spelling
- Write in complete sentences using correct basic grammar and with correct punctuation
- Spell correctly common words and important words related to work and interests
