This is 36-week course is aimed at learners who are able to commit to a substantial qualification and wish to use this to prepare for, and progress to, the next level of learning ultimately leading to entering a job role in this area.

Suitability - Who should attend?

A minimum of Entry 3 or some GCSE Passes at grade E plus the ability achieve Level 1 in English/Maths. Also a positive interview is needed.

Outcome / Qualification etc.

This level 1 qualification will give you an introduction to Carpentry & Joinery. This means you will learn the hand skills and knowledge required for you to progress onto the level 2 in Carpentry & Joinery. This qualification will enable you progress in Carpentry & Joinery and on completion of this qualification, progress onto one of the following qualifications: - Level 2 Diploma in Bench Joinery - Level 2 Diploma in Site Carpentry - Level 2 Diploma in Shopfitting Bench Joinery - Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Wood Occupations You will be trained in the use of the latest equipment used in industry; there are four different progression routes from this programme, good opportunities for 20 hrs work experience, opportunity to transfer into an apprenticeship.

Training Course Content

If you undertake this Level 1 Diploma in Carpentry & Joinery you will cover knowledge in three core subject areas:

  • Health, safety and welfare
  • Technical information, quantities and communication
  • Knowledge of construction technology

You will also learn key practical skills and knowledge in:

  • Producing woodworking joints
  • Maintain and use carpentry and joinery hand tools
  • Prepare and use carpentry and joinery portable power tools

These units are split into knowledge & practical delivery. Practical workshops are designed to give you simulated activities developing hand skills and these are assessed as you progress through your qualification. Your Knowledge is assessed on completion of individual units by way of on line assessment
