Course description
Whether it's supporting elite athletes to reach their full potential, or introducing sport to a young person for the first time, with a career in sports you can play an important role in leading people to a healthy lifestyle. This course covers a wide range of subjects about sport and the human body, and gets you ready for a wide range of related careers, including physiotherapy, sports centre management, personal training and more.
There are six core units as part of the Sport and Exercise Science Level 3 Extended Diploma programme. The six core subjects are:
- anatomy
- physiology
- psychology
- research methods
- research project
- biomechanics

Suitability - Who should attend?
You will need five or more GCSEs at grade 5(B) or above, including English and maths, or a BTEC Level 2 Diploma, grade Merit or Distinction.
Training Course Content
In addition to the six core modules of the programme, there are 12 specialist units, covering:
- exercise
- health and lifestyle
- fitness testing
- training and fitness
- sport and exercise
- massage
- sports nutrition
- sports injuries
- sports coaching
- practical individual and team sports
- applied sport and exercise psychology
- physiology
- work-based experience in sport
Course delivery details
You will study through a mixture of theory and practical lessons. This extended diploma includes work experience, functional skills tutorials and additional qualifications. Additional qualifications include Level 2 treatment and management of injuries, first aid for sport and sports massage.
There are also residential visits and day trips at an additional cost.
You will be assessed continuously throughout the programme and given ongoing feedback to support you through the course. Your assessments will be written, practical and verbal, and give you every opportunity to achieve the maximum grade available. Some of the additional qualifications are assessed through both theory and practical examinations.
Your lessons will be based across two sites; the excellent leisure facilities at Oxford Brookes Centre for Sport and the college's IT facilities.
