Course description
You will study how to mix, master and produce music and engineer in a live sound situation. This qualification gives learners specialist knowledge and technical skills, enabling entry to an Apprenticeship or other employment, or progression to related higher education courses. An excellent creative addition to your A-level or BTEC diploma Program.
This two-year Extended Certificate will gain you UCAS points equivalent to one A-level and can be studied alongside a BTEC Diploma or two A-Levels.
The content of the qualification meets the knowledge, understanding and skills that underpin the role of a Studio or Live Sound Engineer.
- This course is for you if you have an interest in music and want to learn more about how it is created. It is designed to increase your knowledge and understanding of music production software, live sound engineering and recording techniques. You will develop and apply theory and practical skills through recording, editing, and mixing sessions. You will also develop an understanding of studio roles.
- This course is aimed at students who wish to advance their skills and technical knowledge in music technology and production with a view to gaining a qualification that will enable them to progress onto a higher-level qualification and seek employment or apprenticeships in the music technology industry.
- You do not need to be a musician to complete this course, but an enjoyment of music and creativity are a must
- You will be taught by a tutor with years of industry experience.
The course will provide you with a range or transferable skills, much valued in the working world. You will develop presentation skills creativity, analysis, decision-making, and your ability to work effectively in a team. You might even learn how to read all those technical instruction manuals you have at home.

Anyone who wants to develop their skills in recording, live and recorded sound engineering and production skills. The course would work well alongside other creative subjects such as Art and Design, Acting and Media, or technology subjects such as Gaming or IT.

Suitability - Who should attend?
The course has no additional entry requirements to the standard college entry requirements. A passion for music is a must, but you do not need to play and instrument or have any formal musical training. You should be committed and reliable as you will be assessed through group work.
Outcome / Qualification etc.
Students can progress to Higher Education to study music technology or sound engineering related subject at degree level at university.
You could follow a variety of different pathways, including: further study at university, work as a venue technician or technical manager, perform in a band, produce music in a home studio, film sound departments, radio and TV production.

Course delivery details
Practical workshops, classroom lectures, visits to venues, visiting workshops. Students are expected to study outside of college to gain the most out of their studies. This may include recording sessions, and studio time,
as well as completing any necessary homework. There will be a controlled conditions task at the end of the course that will take place over a series of longer sessions totaling 15 hours.
Homework:
In addition to completing homework tasks you will be expected to attend extra rehearsals and performances outside of class time.
Expenses
A BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate is equivalent to 1 A Level.
There is no requirement to have access to the hardware or software at home.
