Course description
This course is the UAL Level 2 Award and Diploma in Art and Design.
Our Level 2 programme is your first step towards pursuing a career in an art, design or craft-related specialism.
Throughout this course, you will delve into a range of materials, processes, and techniques, making use of our Makerspace facilities to produce and develop your work. You will explore 2D, 3D and time-based disciplines by working to briefs based on a variety of themes. You will look into art and design history, artist and designer research, and current world context to spark your imagination and influence your outcomes.
This course will broaden your art and design skills and build confidence in working across specialisms such as fine art, graphic design, illustration, textiles, and photography, with the aim of writing a project proposal for your final project, in a specialism of your interest. You will gain knowledge that links to creative industry careers in preparation for employment or progression onto our Level 3 programmes.

Suitability - Who should attend?
Minimum of three GCSEs at Grade 3 (D) or above, including English and usually maths.
A Level 1 qualification in Art and Design, or a portfolio of work If you do not have a Grade 4 (C) in GCSE English language and/or maths. However, you will be required to be working towards achieving these alongside your art course.
We will also need to see your latest school report.
Outcome / Qualification etc.
You could progress to a Level 3 programme.
Training Course Content
This intermediate level course is designed to give you a broad base of knowledge and experience to prepare you for employment or for progression onto one of our Level 3 pathways in either, art and design, fashion and clothing, graphic design or photography.
Over the one year course, you will complete projects and assignments using a broad range of techniques, processes and materials. Areas covered include workshops in photography, fine art, textiles, graphic design, fashion, ceramics, sculpture, and metalwork.
You will study the following topics:
- Unit 1: Introduction to materials, processes and technical skills in art and design
- Unit 2: Introduction to contextual research in art and design
- Unit 3: Introduction to drawing skills
- Unit 4: Introduction to communication skills in art and design
- Unit 5: Solving 2D creative problems
- Unit 6: Solving 3D creative problems
- Unit 7: Solving time-based creative problems
And one of the following:
- Unit 8: Developing and producing a personal project in art and design at Level 2
- Unit 9: Developing and producing a personal project in art and design at Level 3
Course delivery details
Over the year, you will work on a variety of different projects, delivered through a combination of practical project work, specialist workshops and lectures.
In addition, you will develop English and maths and entrepreneurial skills through live projects and enterprise activities.
You will be responsible for a significant amount of self-directed study. This will allow you to build a portfolio of work suitable for progression on to a Level 3 programme or employment. You will also develop professional skills in presentation techniques.
You will be set practical assignments to complete that reflect professional practice. Emphasis is placed on working and learning with others. You also need to be able to work independently and take responsibility for your own learning.
Throughout the course, you will be required to complete additional tasks, including research, on your home study days.
