Course description
Get hands-on experience of dog grooming and learn more about the industry, with our Level 2 Certificate at Writtle College. It’s ideal for those with little to no previous experience.
Our course includes classroom-based lessons and practical sessions. Practical sessions take place in our campus dog-grooming parlour, which is open to the public.
Classroom lessons cover:
- Legislation
- Points of the dog
- Equipment and care
- Handling and restraint of dogs
- Normal and abnormal health in dogs
- Parasites
- Kennel Club breed groups
- Coat types
- Customer care
This is a very popular course and we receive a high number of applications for a limited number of spaces. We recommend applying early to avoid disappointment.

Suitability - Who should attend?
Main
If you’re under 19 you must have:
- English and Maths GCSEs at no less than Grade 3 or Grade D
- Satisfactory references from most recent school, college or employer
- a work placement of two days per week arrangedbeforestarting the course
We adviseallstudents to obtain some work experience in a grooming parlour to gain additional experience with handling and control of dogs.

Training Course Content
Mandatory units
- Prepare and groom dogs prior to bathing
- Bathe and clean dogs
- Use equipment used for grooming or removing hair from animals
- Control and restrain animals
- Dry dogs and prepare their coats for styling
- Basic trimming of a dog's coat
- Cleanliness and bio security of the animal care working environment
