Course description
Celebrating the 150th anniversary of H.Berlioz`s death, this course will investigate the life, times and music of the French composer Hector Berlioz, and put into context the influential 19th century style, of Hector Berlioz`s music. In addition the distinctive musical characteristics associated with 19th century Romanticism, as exemplified in In H.Berlioz`s music , will be studied. Furthermore,H.Berlioz`s significant contributions to the modern orchestra, with his treatise on instrumentation will briefly be considered. Considerable use of CD sound illustrations and DVD extracts will be made. No prior musical knowledge is required.
