Course description
Delivered at our Chippenham campus, the Higher National Diploma (HND) Engineering (General) pathway is aimed at students wanting to continue their education through applied learning.The course provides a wide-ranging study of general Engineering and is designed for students who wish to pursue or advance their career in this sector.In addition to the knowledge, understanding and skills that underpin the study of the engineering sector, this course will give you experience of the breadth and depth of the sector that will prepare you for further study or training.
Suitability - Who should attend?
Although Pearson do not specify formal entry requirements, for students who have recently been in education, the entry profile is likely to include one of the following:
- A BTEC level 3 qualification in Electrical / Electronic Engineering or General Engineering.
- Other related level 3 qualifications such as an Access to Higher Education diploma awarded by an approved Further Education institution.
- GCSE grades A* to C (9 to 4 or equivalent) in Maths and English, or equivalent.
- Related work experience.
- An international equivalent of the above.

Course delivery details
A Higher National qualification is equivalent to either a level 4 or level 5 university qualification, for example a foundation degree.
This level 5 course will be delivered using a blended approach of both class-based sessions and remote learning.
The duration for this part-time course is 3 years. Attendance is one day per week.

This course is assessed using a range of assessment strategies.
Practical sessions take place in modern purpose built labs with specialist equipment and software provided. You will have access to resources such as our online learning environments.

A HND General Engineering satisfies the current academic requirements for registration for Incorporated Engineer (IEng). You may be able to apply for a top-up year or a relevant level 6 qualification. You may also progress into industry employment.
