The Association of Accounting Technicians is well recognised and respected as a professional membership body throughout a wide range of businesses and requires its members to have a professional and ethical approach throughout their accountancy and finance careers.
The AAT Foundation Certificate in Bookkeeping provides an entry point for anyone wishing to start a career in accountancy or finance as manual bookkeeping underpins all accountancy and finance roles.
The course will help students to develop a strong foundation of bookkeeping knowledge and skills needed to work in accountancy and finance or to go on to study higher-level bookkeeping or accountancy.& The course is suitable for those already working in finance, those returning to work after a break or those wishing to change career.
Suitability - Who should attend?
AAT does not set any formal entry requirements for the study of the Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping. However, for the best chance of success, it is recommended that you have a good standard of English and Maths before starting the course with a GCSE at grade C (4-5) in both subjects, or equivalent.
If you do not have formal qualifications in English and Maths, please discuss your situation with the course tutor during your interview.
Training Course Content
The Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping includes two mandatory units. Introduction to Bookkeeping and Principles of Bookkeeping Controls which will introduce you to double-entry bookkeeping, which is fundamental to the preparation of financial accounting records and statements. You will be able to check transactions for accuracy, make entries in appropriate books and ledgers, and calculate sales invoices and credit notes.
You will also cover journal entries, correction of errors, control account reconciliations and bank reconciliations.
Course delivery details
During weekly classes your tutor will introduce you to the skills and knowledge needed for each unit, using a variety of resources including lectures, handouts and e-learning via the college virtual learning environment.
Time in class will always include the completion of practice questions to consolidate knowledge, and this will be reinforced by home study. Homework will be set most weeks, and you will also need to allow time for reading and working through questions in your textbooks. Regular attendance in class is essential to maximise your chance of success.
The Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping is assessed by online examinations which will be taken at stages through the course. Your assessment will be assessed as ‘competent’ or ‘not yet competent’ and you will receive your result shortly after the end of your examination.

The accountancy and finance knowledge developed in the Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping provides underpinning knowledge needed to progress to the Level 3 Diploma in Accounting (Level 3).For the best chance of success in the Level 3 Diploma, it is recommended that students supplement their learning from the Certificate in Bookkeeping with some additional reading prior to the start of the course.Your tutor will advise you on the recommended additional reading towards the end of your Bookkeeping course.
