Course description

This course is held at the Skills + Logistics Centre in Feltham and covers all aspects of carpentry and joinery alongside technical underpinning knowledge. Working with wood can be extremely varied and rewarding, with jobs both inside and out. This qualification can help you get a job constructing, erecting, installing and repairing wooden frameworks as well as creating internal and external frameworks. You'll get hands on experience cutting shaping and fitting incredible pieces of work and gain experience in metal partitioning, dry lining, tiling and repairing brickwork.

Suitability - Who should attend?

You must have completed Level 1 before progressing to the Level 2 Diploma, or have relevant skills and experience which will be assessed at your interview. You will also be required to take an initial assessment for English and maths and will need a minimum of Level 1, GCSE grade D /grade 3 or abovestandard.

Training Course Content

Timber has been used for thousands of years and it's still an important construction material throughout the industry. A building isn't all about bricks and mortar. Timber is an essential part of just about every structure, and it's the carpenter and joiner's job to prepare it and put it into place on a construction site. It's a skilled job that utilises special tools and often involves many different kinds of wood.

You will receive instruction, guidance and encouragement to practise and develop the skills necessary to achieve the award. The course covers a wide range of subjects including:

  • Move and handle resources
  • Contribute to work efficiency
  • Access equipment
  • Carcassing
  • First fix before plasterwork
  • Second fix after plasterwork
  • Power tools.

You will be required to wear appropriate protective equipment in the workshops, including safety boots and overalls. Attendance of 100% is necessary in order to complete the course.

There are timetabled sessions designed to enhance your skills in English and maths and you will receive separate certificates on successful completion of the programme. You may also choose to study for a GCSE or resit a previous GCSE subject to improve your grade. These qualifications will enhance your employment opportunities.

Course delivery details

The course is assessed through a combination of practical projects, written assignments and written tests. You will also have to complete a phase test and two multi-choice papers and provide work-based evidence.

Continuing Studies

Progress to Level 3 Carpentry and Joinery, or find employment or an apprenticeship.
