Course description
This course is designed to address the particular problems of designing, specifying, preparing and placing mortars in the repair and conservation of historic masonry buildings. The programme comprises lectures, demonstrations and practical exercises on the ruinette together with some laboratory work. It includes instruction on basic analytical techniques relating to existing mortars and failures, practical sessions on preparation of traditional non-hydraulic and hydraulic lime mortars, cutting out, tamping, pointing and curing. Advice is given on translating good practice into specification with guidelines on costs. All teaching takes place in the main house or the Sussex Barn, with practical sessions using the Ruinette.
