Course description
A wide choice of primary training is available in this country in aspects of object care. There are relatively few opportunities for conservation professionals to find specialist training to enhance their knowledge of materials and techniques. West Dean College has developed a series of short courses aimed at meeting this training need.
Carpets are often overlooked in room settings; despite their rich designs and historically important backgrounds. Carpets frequently come into the conservation studio when their damage has become a health and safety hazard at which point the conservation treatment will probably have become far more costly than might have been the case with some care and forethought. Preventive conservation for carpets which have 20-90,000 people per year walking over them poses problems which are difficult to resolve. There are also the specific problems caused by common dangers such as infestation and fire. When dealing with large carpets security planning is essential.
The conservation treatment of carpets has become a small but important specialisation within textile conservation.
