Course description
The School of Education Graduate Summer School is an academic initiative for those graduates who wish to develop their professional practice and skills. Over the course of three days attendees will join in high quality subject-specific lectures, interactive seminars and activities. Upon successful completion of the assignment 20 credits at Masters Level will be gained.
In 2019, the focus of the Summer School is The Practice of Ethical Leadership:
There remains an appetite for understanding what constitutes ethical leadership given recent public scandals and a leadership landscape predicated on misdeeds. We will explore the interface between ethics and leadership and its fusion with ethical decision-making. By examining advances in theory, critiquing empirical research and critically reflecting upon practice, the exposure to new thinking will provide students with the opportunity to evaluate, refine and elevate their own prospective (ethical) leadership skills.
As Ciulla (1995) contends, ethics is not without effort. As such, opportunities to test, challenge and reinforce this important aspect of leadership must be taken (Stephenson, 2017).
The Graduate Summer School will provide attendees the opportunity to:
- Gain an understanding of the key enablers to ethical leadership.
- Explore research and theory relating to the role of ethics in leadership.
- Evaluate and develop strategies to support leadership in challenging times and contexts.
- Identify and reflect on what helps and hinders decision-making, focusing on personal and professional perspectives.
- Foster leadership growth and accelerate development in relation to self and organisational others.
- Understand how leadership impacts upon society.
When and where?
The Summer School will commence on Wednesday 24 July 2019. Lectures will take place at the University of Worcester’s City Campus, a historic Georgian building and birthplace of the British Medical Association, located in the heart of Worcester.
