Course description
Understanding Flat roofing
Continuous membrane waterproofing has long been recognised as providing an ideal solution where roof design calls for flexibility, sustainability and cost effectiveness. A large proportion of the existing residential and commercial stock is wholly or partly covered by membrane systems and they are now frequently integrated with renewable energy equipment and green roofing. Professionals encounter them regularly when conducting surveys and undertaking valuations and when required to give practical advice about the specification of new or replacement roof or the diagnosis of problems with an existing roof. They need to understand past and present practice, to analyse problems due to poor design or maintenance and to be able to offer durable solutions. They also need an awareness of new developments and their benefits so that options proposed are technically comparable. This annual course meets those needs, drawing on expertise based on the highest level practice.
The course covers:
- definitions and key standards
- types of roof system: behaviour, design considerations and suitable materials
- materials
- condition assessment
- options for refurbishment
- impact of Building Regulations Part L and future trends in carbon reduction
- solar renewables – are they a risk to roofs?
- case studies
