Course description
Fort Nelson
Wednesday 22nd May 2018
1.50pm to 5.10pm
Fort Nelson lies to the north of Portsmouth on Portsdown Hill. Construction started in 1862 and was part of a ring of forts constructed to surround Portsmouth to protect it from advances in gun technology. The fear was that a potential enemy would attack from the land take possession of the hill and bombard Portsmouth so rather unusually its defensive gun emplacements face inland. This course will look at the immense construction issues in creating the Fort, the built environment conservation issues involved in present times and the resultant conservation issues for the Royal Armouries Collection based at Fort Nelson.
The learning outcomes of this course provide an understanding of:
• construction issues involving immense quantities of bricks and mortar
• the techniques and skills involved in conserving and managing this historic estate
• the relationship between conserving historic artefacts in the context of a large historic structure
• a tour of the site leading to an understanding of the management of historic built environment sites
