Immunisation and Vaccination - Two-Day Core Course
This two-day study day, for nurses new to immunisation, covers the aims of immunisation, the immune system and how vaccines work, correct administering, adverse reactions, contraindications, consent, medico-legal issues, storage and handling, anaphylaxis, child and adult vaccines and schedules, and basic travel. This double study day is aimed at nurses and is not suitable for Health Care Assistants. Day 1 to be completed before attending day 2 face to face.

Suitability - Who should attend?
This session is for nurses new to immunisation. Online learning to be completed prior to attendance.
Outcome / Qualification etc.
- Attendees will have completed the required preparation to undertake immunisations.
- Following this, preparation assessment of practice must be performed by a designated person in your workplace before you can be deemed competent to practice independently.
Training Course Content
Day 1: Theory via learning for health:
Modules to complete included as a prerequisite:
- National Immunisation Policy and Programme
- Immunology
- Communicating with patients, parents and carers
- Legal aspects
- Vaccine storage
- Vaccine Administration
- Anaphylaxis
Day 2: Theory into practice face to face taught session, the session will include:
- Day 1 Refresher
- Review of vaccine preventable illness
- Vaccine selection, ordering, stock
- PGD's, PSD's, national protocol
- Documentation
- Antivax movement and vaccine hesitancy (coping strategies)
- Optimising vaccine uptake
- Adverse events and report
- Ethics surrounding vaccination
