Course description
The construction sector is vital in contributing to the national economy and in providing the essential infrastructure to support other sectors. In light of the current economic climate it is more essential than ever to gain skills and qualifications in this area, to improve future prospects and job progression. Craft masons build and repair walls, chimney stacks, tunnel linings and decorative stonework like archways. They also refurbish brickwork and masonry on restoration projects. They measure work areas, mix mortar, shape, trim and lay bricks and set out first rows (courses). Craft masons check that all courses are straight and also apply damp courses to prevent moisture from passing through the walls. This is a highly skilled and highly sought after trade in this area of the country.
