Course description

The University of Nottingham

As part of the new BCVA DeVelopmEnT CPD Programme launched in 2013, a series of practical ‘Advanced Practitioner’ workshops have been developed that are available to all advanced cattle vets. These sit alongside the already hugely successful ‘Foundation’ modular courses and the new ‘Masterclass’ courses, providing a CPD programme for cattle practitioners at every stage of their careers.

 

Course Outline

Within this one and a half day course both theory and practical aspects of mastitis management in cattle will be covered. The course is ideal for those studying for CertAVP (cattle) as well as for

those wanting a practical course in bovine mastitis.

 

Topics covered:

. Context and Importance of mastitis

. Diseases of the udder and teat

. The Pathogens - modern concepts in their epidemiology

. Herd Diagnosis - aligned with the AHDB Dairy Mastitis Control Plan

. Treatment of mastitis — interactive seminar

. In the Parlour; milking machine and routine - including an on farm practical

. Control of mastitis — putting the theory into practice

A significant amount of on-line material will be supplied to allow delegates to add depth andimprove practical application in all these areas.

 

Key Learning Outcomes

. Understand the importance of mastitis in the dairy industry and the role of the veterinary surgeon in planned mastitis control

. Have an in-depth knowledge of the pathogens that cause mastitis with a particular focus on characteristics that influence their treatment and control

. Be able to make an accurate diagnosis for mastitis in dairy herds and have a detailed understanding of how to monitor mastitis

. Have In-depth knowledge of the approach to mastitis control, including important aspects of environmental management, the milking process and preventive therapies

. Use evidence based medicine and sound clinical reasoning to construct plans for the control of mastitis in dairy herds including use of the AHDB Dairy Mastitis Control Plan

 

AHDB Dairy Mastitis Control Plan

This course will count towards training for delivery of the AHOB Dairy Mastitis Control Plan (DMCP). At the end of the course, delegates will receive software, materials and the license that will be needed lo deliver the DMCP. Please note, Day 2 of the DMCP will also need to be attended (booked through AHDB Dairy at an additional cost) prior to being fully registered as a DMCP user
