Course description
Managing Complex Projects
The project managers charged with today’s complex projects, face radically increasing demands and challenges than only a decade ago. As a result, they require a complex set of skills, tools and behaviours that go beyond project management essentials/fundamentals.
This workshop design is highly experiential, building on principles of accelerated learning, and uses the world’s most advanced computer simulation to create an unbelievably real project environment. Several months of project management experience are condensed into a few days as participants are immersed in a realistic, complex, dynamic project comprised of numerous tasks (WBS, dependencies, estimates), 12-15 staff members (with varying personalities, skill sets, experience), vendors, contractors/consultants, quality requirements, technology requirements, schedule commitments, customer interaction, budgets, meetings, status reports to management, etc.
In teams, participants build the components of a thorough, defensible plan based on practical methods and techniques and then execute their project — facing every decision that project managers must face in real life—all while managing the normal project upsets, such as design problems, vendor delays, customer changes, morale and personal issues, staff pulled-away or unavailable, absenteeism, quality problems, resignations, overtime issues, personality problems etc.
Furthermore, the simulation and workshop dynamics provide the setting to build and reinforce personal behaviours for developing high-performing teams. For example, as participants begin to perform in such a real-life simulated environment, their normal, everyday behaviours emerge, providing a powerful opportunity to address interpersonal issues and skills.
